Well, Mercury-Woman is probably more accurate. Mz. Wagner has been featured as the Mercury vehicle spokes model in their ads since 2005, and has become known as “The Mercury Girl.” A lady after our own hearts – sexy, talented and utterly-obsessed with anything branding a Mercury label.

[nggallery id=1]

Jill Suzanne Wagner was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was raised by her father, a former Marine, and attended/graduated North Carolina State University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in management. She entered acting/modeling around the turn of the century, appearing in Stuff magazine following her national debut in 2003 as a cast member on the MTV series Punk’d. Wagner ranked #90 on the Maxim Hot 100 Women of 2004. In January 2007, Wagner stated that she had been interviewed about the possibility of portraying Wonder Woman in the upcoming movie version, saying, “I met with the guys over at Silver pictures about some things and Wonder Woman was one of them.” Her filmography, listed below via Wikipedia, shows her short yet flourishing career in both TV and Film. But it’s the Mercury ads we are most interested in. Before Kate Walsh came along in her Cadillac CTS, Jill showed off the Mercury Mariner, Mercury Sable and all new Milan. Don’t know what we’re talking about? Check out some of her Mercury TV Spots below:

Back during the 1970’s Mercury’s Grand Marquis was one of the hottest two door coupes Ford Motor Company produced. Sure, it was big, bulky and boxy – but every vehicle was back then. Today, Grand Marquis has become something your grandparents drive, a car your kid gets to try and look like a police officer while cruising around town at night. But you have to give Merc credit, because the Grand Marquis is a platform still alive and well.

Your average 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis was a two-door coupe with two-tone paint and a V6 or V8 engine. Don’t forget the sleeves over it’s rear wheels. Over the years, Marquis grew from a two-door to famous four-door passenger friendly vehicle – making appearances as taxi cabs and police cars, much like its Ford counterpart Crown Victoria.

Throughout the 90’s Mercury made the Grand Marquis even larger and more rounded – again taking design cues from the Crown Vic. Today, the car is a beast of an automobile. Large and in charge, the car still sells well and can be found (again) as livery cabs and even used in limo services. Also, first time drivers are still pretending to be cops when they buy a used Grand Marquis.

Mercury drivers can now take advantage of voice activated in car communication thanks to a collaboration between Ford and Microsoft. The Ford SYNC allows users to control most Bluetooth enabled mobile phones and digital media players when the new $395 SYNC option is added to a vehicle. This technology is based on Microsoft’s Auto software which allows voice commands to be send to Bluetooth devices. The 2008 Mercury Sable, Milan and Mountaineer each have the SYNC option available. Consumer response to this option has been positive which may lead to all future models including the voice activated technology.

The rumor mill has been cranking out news that Mercury may be on its way to retirement as sales for the vehicle continue to decline. Ford continues to deny these claims though auto executive Jerome York said that discontinuing the brand would be a wise decision for the struggling automaker. York is an advisor to Kirk Kerkorian, whose company ownes 4.7% of Ford. So far Mercury’s sales have been down 23% only beating out Chrylser and Hummer. During the mid- 80s Mercury was selling half a million vehicles a year compared to a mere 168,000 last year. Market researcher Aaron Bragmon predicts that “Mercury has one more product cycle left in it, and then will almost certainly be retired as a brand.” However, Tom Libby of J.D. Powers notes that “”Discontinuing a brand isn’t as easy as you might think…It’s a long-term process and it can be very expensive.” Within the next few years Mercury enthusiasts will likely find out if the brand has already sealed its fate.
