The life and times of a guy from New Jersey, and his 1994 Mercury Topaz.

This story does not take place in the 90′s, but 2002. I was a student halfway through my junior year at Kean University. It’s a commuter school, with barely any dorms to speak of. There’s plenty of parking (nowadays, when I was there you had to fight for a spot).

The school’s location right off The Garden State Parkway and Route 82 in Union, NJ made it a breeze to get to (off rush hour, at least).

Not my actual Topaz, but a close twin

So there I was, commuting 30-40 minutes up and down the parkway each day. My beater mid-80′s Non-Ford could only take so much punishment. One day, I turned on the car and its engine fell out through the bottom. I needed a new ride, ASAP. Midterms were coming up, not one class could be missed in preparation.

My father happened to be off early from work that day. As I sat home, pouting over the lack of an automobile in the suburbs, dad called me from our family mechanic. He found a car that was only described as “Like a Mercury Cougar, but with 4-doors.” I was very excited, a 90′s Cougar?! What a find! For $2200 with low mileage.

When I arrived, it wasn’t a Cougar, but a Topaz. Disappointment settled in slightly, but I was relieved I could buy something that needed little work and not kill my insignificant savings.

There were little remainders of Ford influences on the vehicle, aside from the fact that Topaz was really a rebranded Ford Tempo. The tape deck (yeah I said tape deck), front and rear light covers, and floor mats all featured that oval logo. But the mighty Mercury symbol across its plastic grille, along with its V6 ‘America’ (Canadian) engine under its hood.

I sat in the driver’s seat, closed to door, and those noisy automatic seat belts slid across my shoulder. You remember, the ones attached to the doors in all 90′s Fords. It had automatic everything, in fact. There was even cruise control. Like any used car with power windows, at least one of those didn’t work, the same with one of the power locks. You could only open the rear drivers side door from the inside. It was nice to be driving again, so I didn’t care much.

But there was plenty more to come from my Mercury experience: date nights, college graduation, prowling the streets of New York City, moving to Philadelphia – where the car eventually met its demise. Stay tuned, if you’d like.

Does San Fransisco Hate America? No, just their automobiles. Out looking for a great deal on those remaining 2011 Mercury Milan sedans? Well, you won’t find one in San Francisco. In fact, you find any new Ford made cars on sale in San Fran.

As The Car Connection reports, “San Francisco Ford Lincoln Mercury closed on April 30, 2011, which means that there are now no domestic new car dealerships within the city’s 47.6 square mile area. Want to buy a Ford product? The closest dealership is now in Serramonte, about 12 miles out of the city.”

Dennis Fitzpatrick, regional vice president of the California New Car Dealer’s Association, explained the situation to the San Francisco Chronicle as follows: “It’s a tough market. Imports have a much bigger share in San Francisco. When you can sell 100 imports a month as opposed to 25 domestic, and what with the rents and real estate, it’s tough to make a U.S. car dealership pencil.”

“San Francisco is not loyal to anything domestic; it’s allegiance is to anything but domestic.”

The end of Mercury has come and gone. With thousands of vehicles (Sables, Mariners, and more!) left on dealership lots, what is a car dealer supposed to do? As far as money is concerned, the cash flow originally going into Mercury for 2011 (and beyond) is being absorbed by Lincoln. Yes, the updated luxury Ford brand will take on funds and put them into the concepts, which will hopefully assist new models attract a fresh audience to the stereotypical old-people’s car.

Other dealerships, which are shedding the Mercury signs to read “Lincoln” only, are selling 2009 and 2010 models Tens-of-Thousands of dollars under original MSRP.

But not all Mercury dealers are going to be o.k.: 1700 Mercury-specific dealerships nationwide are either closing their doors or morphing into the Lincoln brand. 1000 dealers signed an agreement with Ford (Merc’s parent company) to take a moderate sum of money and walk on. But many of those 1000 are starting to feel like they’ve been a little stiffed.

In the end, it’s a tough transition. Leftover Mercury models will spend time jumping around car lots, to auction blocks and donations, to eventually the scrap yard. maybe by then you can get a “new” 2010 Mariner for your teenage son or daughter. But we’ll miss you, dear Merc. Travel well.

The 71-year old Mercury brand marks the 4th recent American auto maker to kick the bucket. Following in the footsteps of Saturn, Hummer and Pontiac – Ford’s press department announced that the iconic brand would be cut down. It’s hard to be surprised – Mercury has not created an original model wince the 1990′s – taking Ford models like Tempo, Taurus, Crown Vic and transforming them into rebranded Topaz, Sable and Grand Marquis alike.

Ford reported that the Mercury name had a 74% decline in sales since 2000. Those are low numbers indeed, but the Merc label did retain some brand loyalty – the same company which gave us the Cougar muscle car and 1940′s Hot Rod Mercury Coupes.

The company began as a Ford offshoot in 1939 by Edsel Ford. “The All New Mercury” started off selling two-door coupes and large family sedans, all made without a huge influence from Ford design. During the muscle car era, Mercury became infamous with its sexy and fun to drive Cougar. That model continues into the late 90′s, before it (the last original Mercury vehicle) was laid to rest.

Mercury tried to re-imagine itself over the past few years – with sexy lady Jill Wagner (pictured above, shooting a Mercury Tracer at 500 rounds per second) selling you the Milan and Mariner. But alas – no one was buying. Why get a Mercury Milan when you can buy a Ford Taurus? Then the gas crisis came. Then the economic crisis came. Then…cash for clunkers. It was a no win scenario.

But why are we poorer for losing a non-original make like Mercury? Because it was American, it was iconic and patriotic. We have already lost Pontiac, a company that had potential, but none were brave enough to invest.

Like them, Mercury has plenty of ideas, they could have taken chances – when your back is against the wall all you have left are chances. But it is easier for the auto companies to close assembly lines, lay off employees and cut production – try to salvage any bit of green so their Christmas bonuses are fat. And in the end, we lose a bit of what it means to be a motorhead in America. That makes us poorer.

Like the poet Jim Morrison once sang – “This is the end, my only friend, the end…” – it looks as though Mercury will soon be no more. Rumors have been circulating the world wide web since late last week – Ford is planning (yet again) on shutting down their Mercury brand – possibly to help reshape an image or just save some money. In this auto economy anything is possible.

After a long standing relationship for 71 years with loyal customers, and the introduction of such icons as the Cougar, Mercury will join a the list of canceled brands including Saturn, Pontiac and Hummer. Declining sales and inability to differentiate itself from Ford are the key factors that help put one final nail in Merc’s coffin.

According to The Wall Street Journal: “Ford spokesman Mark Truby said the company’s plans for Mercury haven’t changed, meaning a previously outlined strategy for turning Mercury into “a smaller niche brand” remain intact. But niche brands typically survive only if they offer something special.”

It’s with a sad heart we report this news – and hope the rumor continues to me just that. I can remember fondly my time with the Mercury name plate – driving my 1993 Topaz all over the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. I must have put 100,000 miles on the Merc before giving it up to another buyer, as I watched it pull away with someone else’s license plates attached I couldn’t help but wonder if I made a mistake. One day we may see a rebirth of Mercury (maybe we are putting it to an early grave) – but for now we sing a song to honor her on the way to automotive heaven:

Last month we were all excited about possible news that Mercury, which is in need of a fresh small car audience, might bring back the Tracer. Well, it looks to be all but confirmed that the Tracer will return in 2011. The vehicle, which is still under development status, will be constructed using the 2010 – 2011 Ford Focus undercarriage and chassis. Tracer will be accompany “10 vehicles Ford is planning to unveil as a part of its global small car program that also includes the soon-to-come 2012 Ford Focus…”

Ford President of the Americas Mark Fields said during a meeting with U.S. auto dealers at the annual NADA convention – “The trend toward more fuel-efficient vehicles is very important, the trend toward (small) cars in general is coming back. We are responding to that.”

Along with new small car production at Ford / Mercury, it’s also been reported the American auto maker will gear vehicles towards hybrid and alternative energy sources, and focus more on diesel truck development.

When on the hunt for automotive news, some people are lucky enough to stumble across patents marking brand names for new car models…. Such is the case with this brave Ford forum poster: who made an astonishing find when looking into new Mercury models:

FUSION TITANIUM
MILAN TITANIUM
>>TRACER TITANIUM<<
ESCAPE TITANIUM
FIESTA TITANIUM
FOCUS TITANIUM
TAURUS TITANIUM
MARINER TITANIUM

All new marks filed in December of 2009.

That’s right – looks like Ford/Mercury are holding a spot for the …umm, classic…Mercury Tracer. Mercury Tracer, first introduced in 1987, was a compact car sold by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company. It was based on the platform of the Mazda 323, replacing the European-derived Mercury Lynx, and was Mercury’s version of the Ford Escort. Stay tuned for updates on the Return of Tracer and thanks to BlueOvalForums for the find!

If Ford is putting money into production of smaller, fuel efficient working vans to get out of a slump, why not give Mercury a chance. I mean, Mercury has basically been rebranded Ford vehicles since the 1980′s – and as much as we love Merc, you can’t doubt that unoriginal designs and bad vehicle concepts that go nowhere are part of the issue behind Mercury’s slow sales.

During the 1990′s and early 2000′s Mercury hit a successful bump in minivan sales with their Villager vehicle. Take something like the Transit Connect, where you can have a family van, work truck or even taxi cab, and Mercury could really come into it’s own again – not leaving it up to another version of the Mariner. I guess the point here is if you’re going to keep Merc a rebranded Ford company, give them a few models that will garner attention.

…And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. Yes Mercury sedan fans, it is a mournful time for us all, as Ford exclaimed their long-selling Mercury Sable will be no more after its 2009 season.

Mercury’s Sable was for years a rebranded Ford Taurus, many times a more luxurious version containing V6, leather seating and automatic extra features. Over the past few years Merc tried their Montego sedan out on the public, and after moderate sales decided to renamed the car a 21st century version of Sable. As of Spring 2009, thanks in part to Ford’s restructuring plan, the Sable will be no more. God speed midsized sedan!
