They tested many of these theories in their little known 1955 Mercury D-528 Concept.

Also known as the Mercury Beldone concept, this design and engineering test vehicle contained an experimental Y-block V8 engine, automatic transmission with overdrive, coil sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes. The name D-528 came from the fact that this car was Mercury’s 528th design project.

Since one of the new options, an air condition unit, was too large to fit anywhere other than the truck space had to be made. To help with room, spare tires were kept on the sides in its fenders, as well as the gas tank, instead of being underneath.

Dash and seating design were also conceptually stunning, and initially designed as Ford’s first car with four headlights.

Subsequent revisions of the D-528 were created throughout the late 50′s, some of which included the impressive roof structure. A-pillars and an interior framework to hold the roof up were also installed. D-528 was moved often being used to test new engineering concepts.

The D-528/Beldone was made famous when in use during the 1964 Jerry Lewis film The Patsy for Paramount Pictures.
